IT’S PAST MIDNIGHT. It’s been two hours since I made the hardest decision of my life—to find a way and free myself from Zillard Dark.

Two hours since my heart broke in a thousand pieces—Zillard refused my offer. I’m not precious enough for him to relinquish his ambitions of taking over the human world. He also refused to tell me why he wanted it so badly, but if I’m honest, why is it a surprise that a demon wants nothing more than to rule the world?

Sam jumps to his feet as I step out of the fireplace portal. He looks tired, forehead creased and cheeks sagging from exhaustion. But he’s happy to see me.

“Izzy, you came,” he breathes.

I look around the library, ascertaining that we’re alone. I made sure that the shadows didn’t notice me slip through the portal from the other side, but there could be other entities roaming.

“I’m surprised that Professor Melvin let you wait at his place for so long. You were enemies for years.”

“Desperate times require desperate solutions. How did you manage to slip away from the demon?”

“Don’t call him that.”

“It’s what he is.”

“I’m still not sure you’re much better, so save the name-calling.” I come to a halt in front of him.

“Please.” He moves to the side, gesturing to the couch. “Have a seat.”

“I’d rather stand.”

“We have important things to discuss, Izzy, it’ll take a while.”

“Not if we want to keep this meeting secret, which we must. I have only a few minutes before Zillard or his minions realize that I’m not home.”

“Home. I thought you stayed with him because you had to. Because he’d required your full submission. I thought that place was a prison for you, not home.”

“That’s none of your business. Get to the point.”

He holds his hands in front of him as if to calm me down before he even says it. “You’re not going to like this. But you must—” He stops, not sure how to say it. “Izzy, this isn’t just about me. This would be saving the whole world.”

“What would be saving the whole world?”

“Listen, I know that you’re in love with Zillard. It’s all over you even though you’re trying to hide it. So I’m perfectly aware that what I’m asking of you is far from easy.”

“What exactly are you asking of me?”

He takes a deep breath. “You have to kill Zillard Dark, Izzy. You’re the world’s only hope.”

I could slap him right now, so hard. I imagine his head snapping to the side, his glasses flying off the bridge of his nose. I think the only thing that holds me back is how spent I am from the wild love-making with Zillard earlier tonight.

Love-making. It sure as hell wasn’t love-making to him, it was dirty fuckery, public sex, just like he likes it. Using women, watching them come undone. I came here still smelling of him.

“Deep down you know he must be killed,” Sam says, catching courage from my silence, or probably from the fact that I remained still as stone, my face expressionless, saying nothing, denying nothing.
